The device’s high-resolution Retina display reduces eye strain during long 12-hour shifts, offering greater comfort and clarity while working.

At Emory, patient care goes beyond efficiency — it’s also about strengthening the human connection through technology. With Abridge, an innovative ambient AI documentation tool, physicians can focus entirely on their patients while reducing documentation burden. During each doctor visit, with patient consent, Abridge listens in the background on iPhone and instantly converts conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time. These notes can then be reviewed by the doctor using Epic Hyperspace on MacBook Air. This innovation helps physicians to be fully engaged during every visit and eliminates the need to spend late nights finalizing notes at home.

Physicians at Emory are impressed by how effortlessly MacBook Air with Apple silicon handles complex medical imaging applications. With apps native to Mac like MIM, clinicians can access critical images such as PET scans for radiation therapy treatment plans. The mobility of MacBook Air allows clinicians to collaborate in person during Tumor Board reviews to determine the best care plans for patients. Clinicians can also show medical imaging scans to patients directly on MacBook Air at the bedside or in clinic. And because it has a battery life of up to 18 hours, doctors can power through their shifts without pausing to find a charger.

The ease of use and performance of Mac strengthens Emory's device ecosystem — and its security. Data protection is a core tenet of Apple products and services, and it is also essential in healthcare. In 2024, a widespread endpoint security software issue brought tens of thousands of PCs down at Emory. Thanks to Mac’s distinct security architecture, Mac computers were unaffected, which was critical in keeping care uninterrupted.

Deploying Mac has also helped Emory IT become more efficient. ”For every Mac that replaces a legacy PC, Emory saves $300 annually on software licensing. MacBook Air uses 50% less electricity compared to our PC deployment, cutting both energy costs and carbon emissions — helping Emory achieve its sustainability goals,” says Emory Healthcare Chief Information and Digital Officer Dr. Alistair Erskine.
